Top 4 Causes of Distracted Driving

When we think of distracted driving, we tend to think of a driver who is texting while behind the wheel. However, while handheld devices are one of the top causes of distracted driving, there are plenty of other causes that people should know about.

Eating & Drinking

Grabbing a bite to eat on the way to your destination is a common and convenient process. However, drive-thru services are a major culprit in the fight against distracted driving. Eating while driving forces the driver to take a hand (or two) off the steering wheel. Additionally, unwrapping a burger or burrito takes someone’s eyes off the road. Unfortunately, this two-second process can be enough of a distraction to lead to a collision.

Many men keep an electric razor in their car when they have to “clean up” before an unexpected date or appointment. While this is convenient, it is also hazardous. Properly trimming a beard takes a lot of focus when not driving, so it stands to reason that cutting a beard while driving is a dangerous endeavor.

Many women prefer to do their makeup while in the car, as it saves time when having to get to an appointment or date in a hurry. Similar to grooming, putting on makeup while in the car is extremely dangerous. Getting the right amount of makeup and correctly applying it takes careful attention to detail, a detail that cannot be wasted on driving if it’s going to be done right.

Last, but certainly not least, we have electronics. Handheld devices like cell phones and hands-free devices are a significant distraction from the road. Trying to pick a different song, replying to a text, talking on the phone, playing a game: each one of these activities undoubtedly takes up someone’s ability to drive without distraction.

There are plenty of other forms of distracted driving, but the causes mentioned above are undoubtedly some of the worst. If you or a loved one are harmed due to someone else’s distracted driving, you may have the grounds for a personal injury lawsuit.
